Sussex Mass & Scratch Dials

Ordnance Survey Bench Mark These were used to define a known accurate height and position which was (is)
used to survey other locations. On more than one occasion I have been pointed to the 'Mass Dial' only to find it is the Bench Mark which many churches used for as they are stone, solid and unlikely to move or be removed. Largely superseded by modern GPS instruments, they are being
left to the elements. (another part of our heritage)
